Title: Looking to move to the isle of lewis harris

Hi

Im living in France right now and am moving back to the UK after 9 years of living in France after my holiday ends we will be back.

Ive toyed with a small holding before and loved it but now been able to go ahead with what i want to do.

I have 2 goats, 3 horses etc and want to do more as I love it.

Im just trying to find the money to start the dream, getting a job on the island is the first step.

Hello and welcome,  let's see now, warm , sunny , food laden, wine sodden France,  or some windswept, storm battered , freezing outcrop on the edges of the British Empire ? that really is a tough descision to make ........ :innocent: 
As for work, I think there might be a vacancy for a midge counter. :-J

Dont know about the outer Hebrides but if you have horses on an isle you had better make sure of merchants , hay sources , vets etc and their distance from you. I dont have horses anymore but it was a lottery if you could get hay and as for straw, there was no straw on Shetland for a whole year a few years back. Rubber flooring is a solution but hay is an expensive item when it all has to be shipped in, try to get somewhere you can chance making your own if you can but they have protected grasslands on Lewis and Harris so I dont know how they work it. We looked at buying the lighthouse buildings right on the north point ( Butt of Lewis?) before we moved here, such a beautiful place and gorgeous beaches, lucky you!

How exciting your plans are!! echo some of the others re the forage situation and costs of island living; not sure the midgies will be as much of a problem if the winds get up...:-))

Hi from the scottish borders.  Remember these smaller communities look for you to add something to the island, not to use it for your dreams only (apologies I don't mean to be rude) I just think a lot of these places are used with good intentions but people find it hard to make it work and have to return to the mainland.  Locals may not like incomers taking jobs.  I would arrive bearing gifts as it were, add something and let them enjoy you as much as you enjoy them.
