Our Black female had a yellow dad and the stud dog also  had yellow, so she did have  yellow and  black pups, the chocolate one we mated with the same stud as he is such a wonderful and  healthy dog, she had all black to our surprise so this time we have mated her to a chocolate male and fingers crossed we should get chocolate, she happens to be an excellent gun dog that is admired buy a few gun people, the stud is also a gun dog so we aim to train a pup up from scratch ...they are so easy to train, the hardest thing and I must admit I have not pursued it for a while is the stay put command, they tend to come back to me all the time!! I love to see working dogs!

how do you breed a red labrador? what colour are the parents or is it just chance?
According to the Kennel Club there is no Red Fox Labrador. The colour is yellow.
Tokala's parents are both the same colour along with her Mum's sister and two girls from a  previous litter. All her litter mates were this beautiful colour. I have seen litters with both black and this dark yellow colour how it comes about i don't know, but I'm sure there is someone on here that does.
Have attched a picture of Mum, Mum's sister & two girls from a previous litter.

Such a gorgeous colour and she has a lovely face. Our pure lab is a very light colour. I know the official term is yellow but I refer to him as blond. He has a blond nature as well.

Quite complicated if you go into it.

I think there are 2 different genes responsible. Black (B gene) is dominant over brown (b gene). So

BB - black dog
Bb - black dog
bb - brown dog ... chocolate

One gene from each parent and so 2 Bb black parents could throw chocolate pups, a chocolate dog to a black dog (Bb) could throw black or chocolate and a chocolate lab to a black dog (BB) will only throw black pups.

Fox red is at one end of the possible colour range for "yellow" labs. If I remember correctly the yellow colour is controlled by a different eee gene which may switch off the bbb gene in some situations ... I think if they carry double ee. Can't recall in detail.

Similar in Flat coated retrievers, where black is dominant over liver colour. Flatties occasionally produce yellows. These are not recognised by the breed.

Phew.

I love the red fox ones. Have you seen the silver ones? A dilute of the chocolate I think and only in American lines?

BB - black dog
Bb - black dog
bb - brown dog ... chocolate

so would Bb x Bb give 1 chocolate(bb) and 3 blacks (BB, Bb, Bb)   in a litter of 4? or do you have to have bb x bb to get chocolates?

                            Bb black mum

B              b           (alleles (genes) the mum could give the puppies)

B       BB            Bb         both these puppies are black
Bb
Black
Dad        b        bB            bb          the left puppy is black, the right puppy is chocolate

So you were quite right, that mating gives, on averae, 3 black puppies and one chocolate one, per 4 pups.

We hope to get chocolate this time as both stud and bitch are chocolate and most of their line is, why is it not advised to mate chocolate with yellow?  Not that we want to.
I never got the genetics, and its fascinating, a friend wanted me to use her stud dog, he is from the same stud breeder but carries  yellow and had a chocolate mum although he is black, we did not want to chance it but we will see!!
