Lamb from last year with slaughter tag in
« on: November 10, 2012, 04:38:38 pm »
Hi all
Ive not been on for a while and hope your all doing ok and got good results from your lambs this year?
I have another little question as im not sure what the right thing to do is,....I have a lamb from last year that wasnt well enough or good enough to be make his trip to the abottoir, it was eartagged at the time with a slaughter tag, so as my lambs from this year are making there journeys I want to send this one this year as its recovered and put on weight, do I have to double tag it now?  The abottair will pick up that its not a lamb ? what to do? any guidence please?

Cut out the single tag and put in double tags, record all numbers in flock register, simples

Also if his first adult teeth are up then he will have to be split in two and the spinal cord removed.  Some abattoirs charge extra for this  :sheep:

Your last years lamb is now a hog lamb, single tag should be left, advise abattoir of its age and they will split it to remove spinal cord costs about £2. You only need two tags when the animal is being kept for breeding.

I wonder if the rules differ in Scotland and England?

In England it's two tags for any animal being kept for more than 12 months.

Interesting that different interpretations  of the tagging rules are still wide spread, all sheep male /female / unsure over 12 mth's must be double tagged  :farmer:

On reading the tagging rules again I admit to being wrong, however I have sent hogs for slaughter and casts born after the 2009 date to market with only one tag without query. They obviously don't check too often.

I sent one off this year and I just added one EID tag and left the slaughter tag in.  My abbattoir didn't comment on this and I don't see why you should cut out other.  Once he's slaughtered I presume tags get thrown out with heads or does some poor soul have to go along cutting all tags out and matching to paperwork??! :roflanim:

This is why they are scanned, it's all automaticly recorded and documented.
