hay , what weight.
« on: August 19, 2009, 03:57:36 pm »
Hello,

I have had ten acres of our land cut last week. I now have loads of hay bales.  They are 1m.20 rolls by 1.20.  I have been told they are about 200 kilos in weight. Does this seem right ?  I just needed to know before I put them up for sale.  It is fairly course stuff as the fields laid empty for two years.

Thanks Kevin

Hello Kev,
although it is a bit of a 'how long is a bit of string' question really , it would seem about right . There are a couple of things that would make them either heavier or lighter. How dry was the grass ? how tight is the bale ? If you are worried about stating an exact weight , just say round bales for sale !!! No body round here sells them by weight though ... just by big round bale or medium or small .....Big dealers selling huge amounts may sell by the ton etc ...but most farmers just say big or small !!

cheers

Going back a great many years (15+) our bales were the old square ones, measuring about 3ft x 1ft x 18inches and I'd say each of them must've been close to 40Kg, so that does sound about right. But maybe someone with more recent experience will disagree ? Maybe whoever told you the weight was trying to suggest that anyone buying them would need machinery to load/unload them ?

Thanks Russ and happy hippy.

I guess I am being far too technical in searching for a weight. Farmers here are the same, its all  ' big bail, small bail "

I am actually tempted to move into my barn, and keep it a while. Prices here are very low, with a 200 kilo bail, selling ( maybe ) for 25 - 30€.  Apparently we are awash with hay, due to the perfect conditions this year.

yes thats the best way Kev , keep it till winter , you will get a far better price then . Mid to the end of winter when all the farmers are running low. Good luck mate ...

cheers
