Has the spell checker disappeared from view now - I can't seem to see it when I post?

Yes, I need to install some software on the new server to get it back. Please bear with me, might be today, will definitely be before Christmas.  :)

Sorry, bad news on this front. The spell checking library the forum software uses has been deprecated and there's no stable way of installing it on this server.

It's going to be removed completely from future forum releases, since most browsers (IE10, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Sea Monkey) have their own spell check functions which are much faster and more comprehensive than web-based versions.

So best thing to do is turn on your browser spell check function.
