Neighbours grrrrrrrrrr
« on: July 06, 2010, 10:32:09 am »
We live at the end of an unmade lane shared with just one neighbour. We have a gate, closed at all times to keep our dogs in and safe, and to stop anyone just wandering in, our neighbours have 2 gsd, one they had as a pup, he's ok,  but the other is an ex breeding psycho dog! whom my neighbour admitted to me she is scared of! Anyway 2 years ago this dog chased my son whilst he was opening our gate and tried to bite him, just catching his t shirt, he was really frightened and shaken, we told the neighbours the dog is dangerous and they must keep them secured! on that occasion we didnt ring the police, we 'try' to get on with our neighbours. They did, for a while keep them in their yard area,  but when they are home they think its ok to let the dogs roam freely around their house and on the lane. this weekend my son walked down the lane to their house to deliver something to them, the dogs were laying outside, ran up to him, barking etc and the psycho bit him, I ran down there and they both saw it happen, I said they should have the dog destroyed its dangerous, and I rang the police.
My son is ok apart from being shaken and has a minor bite and bruise on his side.
The Police came, 2 choices, they arrest the guy who's responsible for the dog, go to court, my son has to be a witness (he's only 10) and the court may or may not decide to have the dog destoyed, OR we have a neighbourhood resolution agreement, where we agree the dogs to be secured 24/7, if they break that agreement then we go back to option 1. I said if they are responsible dog owners they should make the decision to have the dog pts, ( its also gone for my husband, myself,  and my daughter, the nieghbours know about this) although this is the first time we have known it to bite.
The poliice went to see them, no way will they have the dog destroyed, because he feels its his fault not the dogs! true but the dog is dangerous, I am soo angry!
Particularly as we were in a similar situation 2 years ago, when our usually docile gsd, attacked my sheep then bit a worker at ours, we had her pts, it was our only choice.
So we agreed to the neighbourhood resolution agreement, and now wait to see if he sticks to it!

It must be the season to hate your neighbours Dixie. I hope you get something sorted out that works for everyone and your son is not too traumatised. The scarey thing is to go back to Option No. 1 the damned dog has to attack someone again! Not a nice situation to be in.

If it happens again you could allways try to get them to sign the dog over to GSD rescue (instead of PTS), the rescue may be able to get him to an area of work where the aggression and energy can be channeled, police dogs etc.

We had a Nutter in at the kennels as a stray, he now works as a guard dog at Cumbria Truck Centre thanks to GSD rescue.

You will then be outwith the law.  Not the best option.  If the dog bites again it will be put down.  It is now classed as dangerous, and to be honest if it had gone to court it would either have a restraining order placed on it to be muzzled in public or be destroyed depending on the court.  I would suggest you try to make sure it can't get onto your property and don't go onto theirs - if anything needs to be delivered phone them to come and collect it or leave it at their gate.

If a domestic dog that was known to be viscious went for a child of mine I would demand it to be PTS immediatelly!!!! end of!!! .I know some dogs are in the wrong job and have seen many go from rescue through to RAF guard dogs and even drug dogs. The RAF use to just come and view the rescue kennels I worked in and took any dog that was intelligent and curious to give them a last chance. Some were PTS then by them or they went to work. One rescue GSD that had to be kept in a trap run/kennel for the safety of staff that were not trained with such dogs went on to be one of the RAF's top dogs!  But this is a domestic situation with children involved and that is not worth any risk.

Trouble is we have to pass their property to get to ours, they dont have gates around the front. So if the dogs are out we have to pass them, I havent walked my dogs past their house for 2 years, I take them in the car or walk in our fieldd. Sometimes my eldest son gets a lift home to the bottom of the lane and has to walk past them, they chased him too before.

If the dog bites again, the next victim might not be so lucky.

I don't think that I would be walking past their gate without a very large stick. If this dog chases your sheep you would be entitled to shoot it but if it chases your child you are not  ???

Exactly, so IF I ever see this dog out of its agreed compound, then we will shoot it, throw it over the fence and say it was chasing my sheep!! Job done!!  Sadly the moron that owns it probably will lapse and let it out! He did last time, I just wish i reported it last time, hindsight eh?

Perhaps the way around this problem is to use salt cartridges .... can you still get them ?

That's just for yer neighbour   ;)

Oh yes if I have to shoot the dog I may just 'accidently' get the owner too ;) ;)  joking aside, if I ever see the dogs out of the agreed compound I will video/photograph them and call the police, then option 1 kicks in!

HVLT is the best option and i would do it without hesitation (High Velocity Lead therapy - Use delivered from an instrument with two barrells and a trigger)

failing that:

Nice saucer of milk with some car anitfreeze in works wonders
as would a nice steak laced with some poison maybe, Paraquat used to be a sure fire bet.

And yes if anything bit my little girl i would kill it with my own hands, no questions, no problem and i would happily  take my medicine afterwards. What annoys me most is why these irresponsible people are protected/have the right to own a dog which is clearly not a domestic animal and potentially shatter the innocence that little boy had, because, and this is assuming i am sure previous to this he was confident and happy with dogs, and i would bet my last mouthful of Wiz's raspberry tiramasu recipe that he will now look at all dogs with some element of nervousness.

And lets be totally honest in the past year how many fatal dog attacks have their been on children................

Sorry Dixi but i just have a terrible rage when it comes to things like this

:pig:if i was in your position i would resort to the gun too a child has more rights than a out of control dog imo.

we had a similar problem a few years ago and resorted to using a dog stop it comes in a can and the dog gets a blast when it comes to attack the dog in question used to run away like the wind  and soon started to avoid us, the owner of the dog was not happy he said we hurt his dogs hearing  ::)
